Fancy some Friday night laughs? Then come on over to Q Bus Club Leiden for some top headline acts from the UK and European comedy circuits!
Our November headliner is the hilarious John Meagher, a Northern Irish comedian and writer. PLUS SPECIAL GUEST MC – Qbus and Weird Uncle favourite Matthew McAloone (NI) is going to guest MC this show! He is excited to be back on the QBus stage and I know we are all excited to see him.
Meagher is well known for his timely writing and bold performances and recognised widely as one of Ireland’s top new comedians and important working-class voice.
His comedy explores his life growing up on a housing estate during the Troubles, and how these experiences colour his life today. He’s survived a heart attack (the basis of his show “Calm” which has been nominated for “Best Standup Performance” at the Buxton Fringe in 2023), extreme violence (though to clarify that was a professional Martial Artist; his job before comedy, and fought in the World Karate Championships for Team Ireland) and the culture clash of being Irish in England and married to someone from the Middle-East. John drags the harder subjects out into the light and brings a warmth and joy that sets his audiences at ease.
His accolades include:
· In 2022, he won the Panel Prize at the Edinburgh Fringe as part of “Best in Class” (a showcase of working-class comedians).
· Was runner up in the prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year
· Nominated for the BBC New Comedy Award
· A finalist in the Hackney Empire NATYS award (which has launched megastars such as Stewart Lee, Ardal O’Hanlon, and Daniel Kitson).
He was tour support for comedians Patrick Kielty’s and Vittorio Angelone.
John debuted his Edinburgh Fringe Solo debut in 2024 with his show “Big Year”.
He made a Radio 4 comedy documentary “John Meagher: The Divil’s Own” in April 2024.
"I absolutely loved it! - Jon Ronson
“Storytelling at it’s best” – The New Statesman
“John is a very sharp comedian…with a subtlety to his stuff I didn’t have (in younger days)”
Patrick Kielty, Irish independent
“Great timing, great presence and punchlines. A much needed fresh comic voice from Northern Ireland at a time when we most need to hear it.”
Jarlath Regan (An Irishman Abroad Podcast)
Plus support is from Estonian comedian Heli Parna.
