Turbulent times. Netherlands-Japan and the fall of the samurai (1853–1867)
'Troubled Times' shows how the Dutch and Japanese navigated together through the mid-19th century: a turbulent time full of political and scientific changes in which both countries took on a new role on the world stage.
The exhibition premieres the showing of Souvenir du Japon, a rare complete set of lithographs with views of Deshima, Nagasaki and surrounding areas.
Using folding screens, swords, prints, paintings, photographs, maps and maritime objects, seven themes are discussed that explore the relationship between the Netherlands and Japan from 1853-1867. The diversity of the more than a hundred objects from eighteen museum and private collections underlines the versatility of this exhibition.
