Concert Frieda!
Frieda Belinfante (1904-1995) declared shortly before her death that she was 'born fifty years too early'.
She was the first female conductor in the Netherlands. She was also a cellist, resistance fighter and lesbian avant la lettre (she had a relationship with composer Henriette Bosmans, among others). She performed in the Concertgebouw, but her career was ultimately thwarted by the Second World War. As the daughter of a Jewish father, she became very active in the resistance. During the Second World War, she was one of the initiators of the attack on the Population Register in Amsterdam and forged many identity papers. She eventually fled to America via Switzerland, where she took American nationality. She became a very successful conductor in America and founded her own orchestra, with which she gave many concerts. She also became a much sought-after music teacher there. In the storytelling performance 'Frieda!' the musicians take us into the life of this special woman.
