The oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands

The Hortus botanicus is the green plant treasury of Leiden University. For more than four centuries, plants from all over the world have been collected and cultivated, admired and studied in the beautiful garden and greenhouses.

Since 1590

The Hortus botanicus is the study garden of Leiden University. The Clusius Garden, named for its founder Carolus Clusius, is a copy of the first planting. Four centuries of collecting, tending and studying has produced a magnificent garden with a variety of alien, unknown plants. The unusual gardens and greenhouses, including the Japanese Garden and the Victoria Greenhouse, are worth visiting.
